Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services responded to a grass fire on Highland Drive Friday afternoon after an excavator struck a hydro pole, bringing down a hydro wire and sparking a fire in the grass.

Crews were called to the area at approximately 2:21 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026, following reports of the fire.

The downed wire caused the grass to ignite, prompting firefighters to attend and deal with the fire while the area was secured.

The incident also knocked out internet service in the surrounding area.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident.

The cause of the fire was accidental and connected to the excavator striking the hydro pole.
