SIU Invokes Mandate Following Death in Cramahe Township

In Local, Police Blotter
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 28-year-old man following his time in an OPP Cobourg Detachment cell.
Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • On the evening of May 24, 2026, shortly before 7 p.m. OPP officers attended an address in Cramahe Township to do a welfare check on a man at the request of a family member. Once officers learned that the man was wanted on a fail to comply warrant, he was arrested. Due to facial injuries the officers observed the man to have, EMS was contacted.
  • The man was transported to hospital. He was medically cleared and released into police custody.
  • The man was transported to the OPP Northumberland Detachment and lodged in a cell.
  • The following morning, the man went into medical distress.
  • Paramedics transported the man to hospital. He was pronounced deceased.
Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
