Video – Photo Gallery – Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services Recertify Ice Water Training

Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services were along the shore of Lake Ontario on Sunday, February 15, 2026 performing ice water rescue training.

The annual training takes place for firefighters to familiarize themselves for rescue techniques in case they are needed.

While crews were training a number of anglers were on the ice covered pier fishing for steelhead trout.

Some had cleats on their footwear while others didn’t.

Using a Rapid Deployment Craft (RDC) firefighters trained near the mouth of the Ganaraska River on how to rescue a victim and bring them safely to shore.

Every year emergency services repeat, “no ice is safe ice” to warn anyone that takes the risk of walking on a ice shelf along the lakeshore or anglers fishing along the ice covered pier.
