Northumberland County May Have An American Twin

In City Hall, Local

Northumberland County has a new twinning relationship with an American partner – Albany County, New York.

Former Warden Brian Ostrander said at the December county council meeting that he had asked Government and Community Relations Officer Matthew Stergios to draft a letter to every county in the United States, essentially to say “let’s be friends.

“Given the difficulties we are having cross-border these days, it would be good to reach out and let our counterparts know they have a friendly face in Northumberland County.

“I got two replies. One said, ‘thanks for your letter’ and one was, ‘hey, let’s chat.’”

A good conversation was followed by outreach, and then by talks on twinning.

“They were well motivated, and it’s nice to have friends across the border,” Ostrander said.

The vote by council authorized the agreement to be prepared “and to plan for a future signing ceremony between Northumberland County Warden and Albany County Executive.”
