Bell Media has greenlighted a six-part series called In The Line of Fire focusing on the Cobourg Fire Department, Cobourg film producer Mark Johnston announced Wednesday at council’s Community Protection and Economic Development Standing Committee meeting.

Johnston was also involved in the recent series Legion of Honour, which had an episode focusing on the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 133 in Cobourg.

The news came following a screening of the new video he has made, almost completely with local talent, called In A Minute, released on that same day in recognition of Fire Prevention Week with the help of a $25,000 grant from the Ministry of the Solicitor General.

Ontario had 111 fire deaths in 2024, Fire Chief Ellard Beaven said.

“The Cobourg Fire Department does not believe the status quo is an option,” Beaven stated.

“We want to be a leader in reducing fire deaths in Cobourg.

“The entire project took several months and significant staff time to complete. We wanted to show the true cost of not having smoke alarms.”

Beaven also shared year-to-date figures from the department – 47 fires, 196 false alarms, 11 carbon dioxide warnings, 79 rescues, 607 medical calls, and 1,600 Alarm For Life inspections.
