On Saturday, MPP David Piccini stopped in at the Cobourg Museum Foundation’s Sifton-Cook Exhibit Hall to see the results of the $25,200 Capital grant that it received from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) in 2024. Over the last year, the Cobourg Museum Foundation has added an accessibility ramp and new lighting as well.
“It is incredible to see the impact of the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s support right here in Cobourg,” said MPP David Piccini, “Investing in our local heritage is an investment in the strength and identity of our communities. Through the Ontario Trillium Foundation, our government is proud to support organizations like the Cobourg Museum Foundation in preserving our local history and improving accessibility. The Cobourg Museum is another example of how these crucial investments are delivering meaningful results for the people of Northumberland–Peterborough South.”
The old limestone building on Cobourg’s Orr Street has seen many upgrades over its almost 200 years, including the new ramp leading from the main exit into both of the exhibit areas, and the grant has also helped to include lighting for the permanent exhibit area. At the same time, with funding from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, the Cobourg Museum Foundation was able to rebuild the walls at that exit so that the jack post in the middle could be removed.
The event also featured a special talk that honoured the pioneer author Susanna Moodie.
The Cobourg Museum Foundation is focused on maintaining and operating the Cobourg “barracks” building as a museum/heritage centre, showcasing various aspects of local history.
