Wind, water and waves defined the day in Cobourg on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.
Strong north winds whipped Lake Ontario into a frenzy, creating spectacular waves that crashed against the east pier and drew a steady stream of visitors to the waterfront. Although heavy rain held off for most of the afternoon, Mother Nature provided plenty of free entertainment.
People lined the pier to watch towering walls of water explode over the pier. Some posed for photos with the dramatic backdrop, while children stretched their arms toward the crashing waves, pretending they were lifting the water into the air. Others simply stood and took in the power of the lake.
The waves pushed so much water onto the east pier that, at times, it was difficult to tell where the lake ended and the pier began. There was even enough standing water for geese to paddle across sections of the pier, while the inner harbour and the flooded walkway seemed to blend together.
Along Victoria Beach, the rough conditions washed the swim markers ashore as a father and daughter enjoyed the shoreline despite the wind. Later in the afternoon, a surfer ventured onto the lake in search of a steady wave.
As evening approached, the weather finally changed. Rain moved in, lightning flashed overhead, and the waterfront quickly emptied.
Another memorable day in Cobourg, where even stormy weather became an attraction.
