Northumberland County stated they are aware parts underneath the bridge at Ontario and Elgin Streets in Cobourg are crumbling.
The intersection is one of the busier intersections in Cobourg, but is a Country Road.
Underneath the bridge shows three metal bars have fallen from the bridge along with chunks of concrete.
With the size/weight of the concrete it would cause serious injuries if anyone was ever struck by a piece of falling concrete or metal bars.
Reaching out to the County of Northumberland, Director of Communications, Kate Campbell stated, the Pratts Mill Bridge was built in 1990 and is inspected every two years based on legislative requirements.
“This bridge was last inspected in 2024 by a third-party engineering consulting firm. The report identified the issues that you noted – primarily concrete spalling, exposure of reinforcing steel – and recommended rehabilitation in the next one to five years.
Based on the County’s Asset Management Plan, rehabilitation is planned for 2028, with design work (including detailed inspections and studies) slated to begin in 2026, both pending budget approval.”
