Video – Port Hope Mayor Says Loss of AkzoNobel is “Absolutely Devastating” for the Community

In Local

The community of Port Hope is still in shock over the announcement that AkzoNobel will cease production at its facility following a major fire.

The fire which occurred on April 9, 2025, caused “significant damage” and it was announced on April 22 that production at the facility on Rose Glen Road will “permanently discontinue.”

“It’s absolutely devastating for a community of our size and to have a company of that stature make this kind of announcement” said Port Hope Mayor Olena Hankivsky upon hearing the news.

Approximately 45 workers will be effected by the notice.

Hankivsky said she will be reaching out to the company and see how the municipality can help and support the transition.

Over the last few months Hankivsky has toured the facility and met with some of the staff.

“So I know first hand what an impact it’s going to have – not just for the workers themselves, but for their family and their children.”

“It’s very sad news for the community.”

Brenda Whitehead, CEO of the Port Hope and District Chamber of Commerce said that AkzoNobel has always been a strong community partner.

“They’re active members of the Chamber of Commerce, they were sponsors of local sports teams.

Anytime a business closes it impacts the entire community – not just those 45 employees but their extensions and then onto the broader economy at a time when we are already in turmoil from a economic standpoint.”
