Northumberland OPP – Two Drivers Charged with Impaired (Names Released)

Members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged two motor vehicle operators with impaired driving this past week.

Driver Charged with Impaired Following Collision in Brighton

On Thursday April 17, 2025, just after 9:00 pm, police attended to a report of a collision involving two vehicles on Telephone Road just west of County Road 30.

Officers arrived on scene and observed a red Toyota SUV positioned behind a white Chevy SUV. Upon speaking with the uninjured drivers, police suspected the individual who was found to be operating the Toyota had been consuming alcohol.

The officer administered a roadside screening device test, and the driver registered a ‘fail’.

The individual was taken into custody and transported to the Brighton OPP Detachment where further testing was conducted.

As a result of the investigation Leon Devera (age 71) was charged with:
Operation while Impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

Operation while Impaired – alcohol and drugs

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on May 21, 2025.

 

Driver Charged with Impaired Following Collision in Cramahe Township

At approximately 2:15 am on Sunday April 20, 2025, police received a report of a single motor vehicle that had been driven into the trees on Dingman Road just east of County Road 25.

Officers arrived on scene and found a silver-colored Volkswagen hatchback sedan off the roadway.

Paramedics arrived on scene and assessed both the driver and passenger.

EMS transported the passenger to a nearby hospital with non life threatening or life altering injuries.

A roadside Approved Screening Device (ASD) was administered to the vehicle operator resulting in a “fail”.

The driver was arrested and transported back to the OPP detachment in Brighton for further testing.

As a result of the investigation Joshua CHAPIN (age 19) of Brighton, Ontario has been charged with:

Operation while Impaired – Blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

Dangerous Operation causing bodily harm

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on May 28, 2025.
