Video – Nearly Half of Vehicles Ticketed in Municipal Parking Lot “Scam” in Cobourg

In Editor Choice, Local

Nearly half of the vehicles parked in the municipal lot of Charles Street were given $160 tickets on Saturday, August 3, 2024.

Some of the people who received the tickets stated recently that the signage is very confusing, yet the town doesn’t seem to be doing anything to solve the issue.

When vehicles enter the lot, which is for local residents only who have a pass, there is a ticket machine on one side of the entrance and on the other is a sign stating the parking lot is only for local residents who have purchased a seasonal pass.

Even though most people have bought tickets from the parking machine, they’ve received a ticket for $160.00.

The added frustration – sometimes there is no place for local residents who have purchased a season pass because of the people who may have not been aware of the rules.

Today’s Northumberland spoke to one person from Toronto who came with his family to enjoy Victoria beach for the day.

Although he thought he was doing the right thing by paying ($20.00) for parking, he received a $160.00 ticket for the day in Cobourg.

“To be honest with you, it’s not professional” he stated.

“We came here to visit this town and have fun. If the people of this town don’t like other people, they can put a big sign, “nobody’s welcome” or they can put that sign where the meter (parking machine) is.”

“It’s kind of a scam.”

The family came down with their children to have a good time at the beach and come back to their vehicle to find the ticket.

“I hope the people in this town respect others. I don’t think they really need to scam people and to get money from people this way.”

When he pulled into the lot, he read the sign that stated, all day parking for $20.

When Today’s Northumberland was at the municipal lot, nearly half of the vehicles had $160.00 tickets on their windshield, even though they thought they were doing the right thing by paying to park.
