Update – Cobourg Man Steps Up To Help After Local Governments Refused

In Editor Choice, Local

A Cobourg man has stepped up to help after local governments refused.

On July 10, 2024 Today’s Northumberland reported that a Cobourg man cleaned up an area in town after reading a post on social media.

Seventy-six–year-old Chris Clarke and Pat Davis cleaned up an area south of Elgin Street by Birchwood Trail where garbage had been collecting.

After reading the post, Clarke initially thought there might be one bag of garbage, but after six hours of both Clarke and Davis’ surprise there were 18 bags of garbage.

Both the Town of Cobourg and Northumberland County refused to pick it up after contacting them.

After nearly a week animals started to tear apart the bags.

With no solution in sight, and after reading the story in Today’s Northumberland, a local resident did what the local governments refused to do.

Lanny Wilson moved to Cobourg in 2020 where he is now working and said, “I wanted to help after those two did so much work picking it up.”

Wilson works at Battlefield Equipment Rentals who gave him the time off so he could pack up the garbage after reading the story.

When he got to the dump with a pickup truck full of garbage, he thought after explaining it to the person working at the site, that they may have let him dump it for free considering it was a community clean-up.

Unfortunately that didn’t happen and Wilson paid $13 to dump the garbage.
