Taxicab Scams

The Peterborough Police Service is issuing a warning after multiple reports of a scam involving a fake taxi.

The scam involves a person asking the victim to help them pay for their taxi fare. When the good Samaritan helps out and enters their PIN into the card reader, they are then distracted, and the victim’s card is swapped out for a fake card. The suspects then leave the area with the original card and the PIN number. The incidents are happening outside of businesses.

Officers are investigating and anyone with information is asked to call Peterborough Police at 705-876-1122 x555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
