Video – Busy Day for Hamilton Township Fire Department Dealing With Brush Fires

In Local

It was a very busy day for Hamilton Township fire fighters on Friday, March 8, 2024.

Specifically, it was a very busy hour dealing with two brush fires, a medical call and a report of a possible boater in distress on Rice Lake.

The first call was for a corn field on fire at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Danforth Road East where a person was burning some brush that spread.

Cobourg Fire Department also responded to the call.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m. Hamilton Township received another call for a large brush/grass fire on Les Davey Road.

The fire was getting close to a garage, but fire crews arrived just in time.

All three stations in Hamilton Township were dispatched to the grass/brush fire that was behind the home.

While crews were extinguishing that fire, a medical call was dispatched for Hamilton Township for a person in distress on Highway 401.

Because fire crews were being utilized at the fire, Cobourg Fire Department responded to the medical call on Highway 401.

As crews were at that location, they received a call, along with Cobourg Fire Department for a patient on Highway 401 in medical distress.

Due to all Hamilton Township fire apparatus being utilized at the brush fire, Cobourg Fire Department responded.

And at 1:40 p.m. Hamilton Township once again received a call for a possible boater in distress on Rice Lake.

With little to no snow or rain, the brush is extremely dry in areas of Northumberland County.

Fire officials advise if anyone plans on having any type of fire to burn brush etc. to check with your municipality on rules and regulations.

In both grass fires on Friday, the owners of the property did not have burn permits.

Hamilton Township has a by-law that enables where owners who have a fire that gets out of control could face a charge per fire apparatus that attends the fire.

The cost for each truck attending can range in the area of $500.00.

With heavy rains expected on Saturday and possibly snow on Sunday, open air burning may not be a worry – at least for the near future.
