The Municipality of Port Hope is has closed Cavan Street in the area of the former file factory and is awaiting a report from the owners after a partial collapse of the west side of the building.

Director of Protective Services, Jason Williams said the owners of the property met with town officials on Wednesday, February 21, 2024

“They are working on a plan to actually remedy the situation,” said Williams.

Out of an abundance of caution, Cavan Street is closed between Bedford Street and Highland Drive with fencing going across the street.

Williams said that the sidewalk is open for pedestrian traffic as it is located out of the collapsed zone in case something does happen.

At this point the municipality is waiting for the owners proposal.

“The ball is in the owner’s of the properties court right now. They are working on developing a plan to make sure this building is safe. When that plan is presented to the municipality we’ll review it and go from there.”

There are a number of factors involved in the process including hiring contractors, but Williams said they want to get it done, “as soon as possible for a number of reasons, not limited to the impact on traffic, but we want to make sure this building is safe.”

But states that it won’t be rectified in the next week.

“It’s going to take some time to make sure it’s done properly and it’s done safely.”
