Over the past few years, something has seemed to be missing along Cobourg’s waterfront.
Walking through Victoria Beach, Victoria Park, and Rotary Harbourfront Park this weekend, there was a noticeable difference. Whether it was simply good timing or part of a deliberate policing strategy, one thing stood out — the visible presence of the Cobourg Police Service.
Special Constables and uniformed officers were a common sight throughout the busy waterfront. Some were on foot, engaging with residents and visitors, while others patrolled the area on ATVs, ensuring they could quickly respond wherever needed.
Cobourg is far from being a crime-ridden community. However, during major summer weekends and events that attract thousands of visitors, a visible police presence provides reassurance for everyone enjoying the waterfront.
Community policing isn’t just about responding to incidents; it’s also about preventing them. When officers are present, approachable, and interacting with the public, it helps deter unwanted behaviour while creating a greater sense of safety for families, tourists, business owners, and event organizers.
For many, seeing officers walking the waterfront instead of simply responding after something has gone wrong was refreshing. It reinforced the idea that policing is not only about enforcement but also about being part of the community.
There will always be differing opinions on the level of police presence needed at public events. But judging by this weekend, the increased visibility appeared to be appreciated by many enjoying one of Cobourg’s busiest destinations.
Sometimes, the best policing is simply being seen. This weekend, that was certainly the case along Cobourg’s waterfront.
