Police are reminding residents to remain vigilant while shopping following recent reports of distraction thefts occurring at retail stores throughout the region.
These incidents often involve suspects entering grocery stores, discount retailers, and other businesses where they spend time observing customers rather than shopping. In many cases, suspects work in pairs or groups, targeting individuals who may be distracted while selecting items, checking out, or moving throughout the store.
Investigators have noted common behaviours associated with distraction thefts, including individuals who appear to be concealing their identity, closely following shoppers, hovering near shopping carts or personal belongings, and showing little interest in purchasing merchandise.
Victims often do not realize their wallet or other valuables have been stolen until after they have left the store. Stolen bank cards are frequently used shortly after the theft occurs.
Police encourage shoppers to:
* Keep purses, wallets, and other valuables secured and within sight at all times.
* Avoid leaving bags unattended in shopping carts.
* Be aware of anyone following, hovering, or behaving suspiciously in store aisles.
* Report suspicious activity to store staff or police.
Police are releasing photographs of two women believed to be connected to a recent distraction theft investigation and are asking anyone who recognizes them to come forward.
Anyone with information regarding the identity of these individuals is asked to contact police at 905-885-8123 and press 1 to speak to dispatch. Anonymous tips can also be provided through Crime Stoppers.
Police continue to investigate and remind the public that awareness and vigilance remain the best defence against distraction-style thefts.
