Peterborough Police – Daughter of Victim Charged with Second Degree Murder (Name Released)

A 45-year-old Peterborough woman is facing a second-degree murder charge after further investigation into a sudden death.

Earlier this week, officers were called to the area of the London Street footbridge on the east side of the Otonabee River about a woman in the water.  Officers pulled the woman out of the water and attempted life saving measures; however, 74-year-old Susan Maier of Peterborough was pronounced deceased at Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

All sudden deaths are reviewed by the Major Crime Unit.  Further investigation and follow up conducted by officers resulted in the deceased’s daughter, 45-year-old Sarah-Jayne Maier, being arrested and charged on Friday, June 12, 2026 with:

  • Second degree murder

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) court tomorrow, June 13, 2026.

Anyone who may have been on the Rotary Trail on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 9th, 2026 between 4:00pm and 5:30pm is asked to contact Peterborough Police at 705-876-1122 x555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
