Video – High Winds Keep Hydro Crews and Emergency Services Busy Across Northumberland County

In Local

High winds sweeping across Northumberland County on Saturday, June 6, 2026, kept hydro crews, firefighters and municipal workers responding to numerous weather-related incidents throughout the day.

Several trees were brought down by the strong winds, with some falling onto hydro lines and causing power disruptions.

Shortly after 3 p.m., the Cobourg Fire Department was dispatched to the area of Sinclair Street and Harnden Street in Cobourg after a tree fell onto hydro wires, sparking a small fire near the top of the tree.

Emergency crews closed the intersection while utility workers assessed the situation. Lakefront Utilities temporarily shut down power in the area to safely remove branches surrounding a nearby transformer and affected hydro lines.

Officials said the electrical current traveled through the tree trunk due to the high voltage carried by the wires. The energized tree began smoldering at its base, creating a potential fire hazard.

Firefighters extinguished the smoldering section of the tree while crews from Lakefront Utilities and the Town of Cobourg Works Department worked to remove the damaged tree and clear the area.

No injuries were reported, but the incident served as a reminder of the dangers posed by downed trees and hydro lines during periods of severe weather. Residents are urged to stay well back from any downed wires and contact emergency services or their local hydro provider if they encounter hazardous conditions.
