During Paramedic Services Week, May 17 – 23, Northumberland Paramedics are proud to recognize the dedication and impact of paramedics across the region. This year’s theme, “Better Care Starts Here,” highlights the evolving role paramedics play in delivering compassionate, patient-centred care – from emergency first response to preventative care, wellness support, and community outreach.

To celebrate the week, Northumberland Paramedics will host a free, family-friendly community event at the Cobourg Farmers’ Market on Saturday, May 23, at Rotary Harbourfront Park. Residents of all ages are invited to:

· Meet local paramedics and learn more about the ways in which paramedics support community health and safety every day.

· Explore emergency vehicles.

· Meet Ivy Joules, the paramedic therapy dog, and Terry the Traumasarus, the paramedic mascot, who will be available for photos from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

· Families are encouraged to bring along a favourite teddy bear or stuffed animal for a special visit with the Northumberland Teddy Bear Response Team. Through gentle “check-ups” and playful interaction, paramedics can help children become more comfortable with medical care in a safe and welcoming environment. The experience encourages conversation, builds trust, and introduces children to medical procedures in an engaging, age-appropriate way – helping reduce fear and anxiety during real-life emergencies.

· EarlyON Child and Family Centres will also be onsite with interactive games and hands-on activities for children and families throughout the event.

“Paramedics are often there for people during some of the most important moments in their lives,” says Northumberland Paramedics Chief Susan Brown. “This year’s theme, ‘Better Care Starts Here,’ reflects our commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centred care not only in emergencies, but through education, prevention, outreach, and ongoing community support. Events like this give residents an opportunity to connect with paramedics, learn more about the services we provide, and celebrate the important role paramedics play in keeping our community healthy and safe.”
