Northumberland OPP – Driver Stopped for Speeding Charged with Impaired (Name Released)

Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a motorist with stunt driving and impaired operation.

On January 8, 2026, at approximately 1:30 a.m., officers were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 401 eastbound in the Municipality of Brighton when they observed a passenger vehicle travelling at 170 km/h.

The vehicle was stopped, and after speaking with the driver, officers initiated an impaired driving investigation. The driver was taken into custody and transported to a local detachment for further testing.

MD Tawhidul JOY, 24-years-old, from Scarborough, has been charged with:

Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cob ourg in February 2026. A 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a 14-day vehicle impound were also imposed.
