Enbridge Gas Ontario Urges Customers to Keep Meters and Vents Free of Ice and Snow

In Local

With heavy snowfalls across Ontario, Enbridge Gas Ontario is reminding customers to keep natural gas meters and external appliance vents clear of snow and ice. This simple step helps maintain safe and reliable operation of home heating equipment during the bone-chilling winter months.

“Clearing snow and ice from your gas meter and appliance vents is critical for safety,” said Chris Minor, Manager of Operations, Enbridge Gas Ontario. “It helps prevent dangerous blockages, keeps your appliances working properly, and ensures emergency crews can reach your meter quickly especially in the event of an unforeseen emergency.”

Natural gas meters are built to withstand harsh winter conditions, but when covered by snow or ice, their ability to regulate gas pressure can be compromised—posing serious safety risks. Blocked appliance vents can also lead to a dangerous buildup of clear and odourless carbon monoxide inside the home.

If you notice snow or ice on your meter or appliance vent, remove it carefully using a brush or lightly use a broom. Avoid sharp tools or scraping, as this can damage equipment and create additional hazards.

Enbridge Gas reminds customers of these additional safety precautions:

Avoid piling snow against your gas meter or vent pipe when shoveling, plowing, or using a snow blower.

Use caution with snow removal equipment to prevent bumping or damaging your meter.

Never kick or strike your gas meter or vent pipes to remove ice or snow.

Clear overhead hazards: Remove icicles from eaves troughs to ensure melting water doesn’t drip and freeze on your meter or vent pipe.
