Cobourg Police – 91-Year-Old Victim of Distraction Theft

In Police Blotter

The Cobourg Police Service (CPS) encourages the public to take precautions after receiving a report of a distraction theft in Cobourg.

In the recently reported distraction theft, a 91-year-old woman reported being approached in a retail parking lot by an unknown woman who asked for directions. Upon providing directions the suspect thanked the victim by attempting to put a necklace around her neck. In the process of the interaction, the victim’s necklace was stolen. The investigation is ongoing.

Distraction thieves often work in teams, stealing wallets, purses, or valuables. Their victim is distracted by a diversion they create or while the victim is in the parking lot, browsing in a store, or checking out at a cash register. Victims may not realize until later that their property has been taken.

CPS encourages everyone to take steps to help prevent distraction theft.

Be aware of your surroundings and pay close attention to your property.
If someone randomly tries to engage in a conversation.
Be cautious if someone asks for help or offers to help you.

Keep your personal items within your eyesight while shopping, and do not leave any items unattended.
Always lock your vehicle doors, even when you exit just for a moment.
Report any suspicious activity to police.
Report distraction theft to police. If the suspect is still there or in sight, call 9-1-1 immediately.
