The 45th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope took place on Sunday, September 14, 2025 in communities across Canada.

Port Hope’s Paul Appleman has not only participated in each run, he’s been the organizer for the run in Port Hope.

“I’ve done every one,” said Appleman just minutes before the start of the Port Hope Marathon of Hope at 9 a.m. on Augusta Street beside the Town Hall.

“I’m inspired by Terry Fox. Cancer is so devastating to so many people.”

Without hesitation Appleman said without the help from his wife and co-chair Heather Liotti it wouldn’t happen.

“It’s very rewarding. I love doing it and it’s an honour honestly to represent Terry Fox.”

Prior to the start of the 10 km run, walk or bike ride, Liotti announced that over $70,000 had been raised for cancer research.

Appleman said along his five kilometre journey he thinks of people who are suffering from cancer.

“Unfortunately, we can’t save everybody and that really bothers me. I’m hoping we will, eventually stop the suffering.”

“With all the brilliant scientists – it’s going to get better soon.”

Liotti spoke to the crowd, “Terry’s dream still needs to be fought” and thanked everyone for their generosity and donations.

A number of cancer survivors were in attendance on Sunday.

The family of Cindy Lou-Anne Buttar who passed away from cancer on January 18, 2025 were also participating.

“We are heartbroken to hear of Cindy’s passing,” said Liotti.

“Cindy was a big part of Terry’s dream and it’s wonderful to see you all here today finishing the dream.

Hugs to the Buttar’s family on this difficult day after such a huge loss. May we all continue with Terry’s dream.“

Shortly after, Port Hope Councillor Adam Pearson started the event as participants headed up the hill on their journey.

The total amount raised in Port Hope was $72,199.
