Tribute for Former Municipality of Port Hope Councillor John Bickle

In City Hall, Local

With great sadness, the Municipality of Port Hope acknowledges the passing of former Councillor John Bickle who died on Monday, March 9, 2026.

A life-time resident of rural Port Hope, Mr. Bickle was a passionate advocate for agriculture and rural life. His commitment to public service spanned many years, including his tenure on Hope Township Council from 1997 to 2000, and later the Municipality of Port Hope Council from 2018 to 2022. In addition to his elected roles, Mr. Bickle also served on the Accessibility Advisory Committee, the Joint Animal Control Board, and was portfolio chair for the Fire and Emergency Services department.

Beyond his involvement in municipal politics, Mr. Bickle volunteered with the Hope Agricultural Heritage Centre and served on the Board of Directors of the Hope Agricultural Heritage Club. He also helped organize the Heroes Highway Ride, a beloved event in Port Hope, and dedicated ten years of service as a volunteer firefighter with the former Hope Township.

“Public service is deeply valued in our community, and John embodied that commitment through his many years of dedicated civic contributions,” noted Mayor Olena Hankivsky. “Our condolences go out to John’s wife Alice, his sons, David and Phillip, and his extended family and friends at this difficult time.”

In recognition of his service and lasting contributions to the Municipality, the flags at Town Hall have been lowered to half-mast for the week and will again be lowered for the service on March 21.
