Peterborough County OPP – Emergency Services Recover Two Bodies Believed To Have Drowned in Stoney Lake

Officers from the Peterborough County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with EMS and Fire responded to a possible drowning at Burleigh Falls in Stony Lake.

On Sunday August 3, 2025, just prior to 5:00pm, Peterborough County Officers were dispatched to a report of two individuals that had gone missing in the water at Burleigh Falls. The individuals were reported to have been swimming in the area when one individual fell in from the shoreline and appeared to be in distress. Witnesses entered the water to assist resulting in a second individua l also being reported as missing.

Officers along with Fire Rescue attended and conducted a search of the water as well as the surrounding area but were unsuccessful in locating them.

On Monday August 4, 2025, the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) aided in the recovery of the bodies of the two missing persons.

A 24-year-old male from Caledon and a 26-year-old male from Brampton were both pronounced as deceased.

The OPP is committed to boater education, marine patrol/law enforcement and saving lives on more than 110,000 square kilometres of Ontario waterways. With capsized vessels and falling overboard the top contributing factors in boating deaths every year, a significant number of lives stand to be saved if boaters, personal watercraft users and paddlers wore a lifejacket or personal floatation device (PFD).
