Cobourg’s MacNiel Drafted by Montreal Canadians

Andrew MacNiel of Cobourg was selected in the sixth round, 189th overall, by the Montreal Canadiens at the 2025 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday in Los Angeles.

MacNiel, plays for the Kitchener Rangers, which drafted him into the Ontario Hockey League in 2023.

The 6-foot-2 defenceman played just five regular season games for the Rangers during the 2023-24 OHL season while appearing in 40 games for the Fort Erie Meteors of the GOJHL.

This past season, MacNiel – who turns 18 in July – had three assists in 33 regular season games and 12 playoff contests. He was the OHL’s Midwest Division Academic Player of the Month for November 2024.

MacNiel joins Port Hope’s Owen Beck as a prospect for the Canadiens. Beck was drafted by Montreal in 2022 and played this past season for its American Hockey League affiliate Laval Rocket.
