Long-term care residents, families, and frontline team members at Extendicare Port Hope took to the streets to “walk and roll” for their event that raised more than $3,000 in support of the Alzheimer Society Peterborough Kawartha Lakes Northumberland Haliburton District. This local event was part of a nationwide effort by Extendicare long-term care homes to raise awareness and support for those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
The event was held on Friday, May 30, was special in more ways than one. In 2020, residents advocated to town council for a sidewalk in their neighbourhood. Fast forward to 2025, and with more grass and landscaping in the area, the residents were able to fully enjoy their community walk on the new sidewalk as they supported this important cause. It was a great day for everyone. Port Hope Deputy Mayor Vicki Mink participated in the walk and celebrations, as well as representatives from the local Alzheimer Society chapter.
Dementia is one of the leading reasons Canadians enter long-term care. The Alzheimer Society of Canada estimates more than 1.7 million Canadians will be living with dementia by 2050. This is a cause that is close to our hearts at Extendicare because as a leading provider of seniors’ care services, our people work every day to support those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
