A Special Council Meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall, 56 Queen Street, Port Hope.
During this meeting, Council Members will participate in a training session led by John Mascarin of Aird & Berlis LLP, Integrity Commissioner for the Municipality of Port Hope. The session will focus on the implications of the recently passed legislation expanding Strong Mayor Powers to 169 additional Ontario municipalities, including the Municipality of Port Hope.
Strong Mayor Powers are intended to help heads of council more effectively advance provincial priorities such as housing development and infrastructure. These powers include the ability to:
- Appoint and dismiss the Chief Administrative Officer and other senior staff,
- Create and reorganize municipal departments,
- Prepare and table the municipal budget,
- Veto by-laws that conflict with provincial priorities, and
- Direct municipal staff to carry out specific duties aligned with key objectives.
The training will provide an overview of these powers and outline the responsibilities and limitations placed on elected officials under this new framework.
The meeting is open to the public, and residents are strongly encouraged to attend in person to learn more about these changes. For those unable to attend in person, the session will also be livestreamed on the Municipality’s official YouTube channel. For those watching the session online, presentation materials will be available through the Municipality’s agenda page.
