Breaking News – AkzoNobel Shutting Down Production in Port Hope After Major Fire

As a result of a fire that caused “significant damage” to AkzoNobel in Port Hope on April 9, 2025, the company has decided to permanently discontinue production.

“A recent fire at our Wood Coatings production site in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada, caused significant damage to the facility,” said Abbery Reding, Communications and Public Affairs for AkzoNobel.

“After assessing the damage and costs associated with rebuilding the site, regrettably a decision has been made to permanently discontinue production and R&D activities at our Port Hope site. Some warehousing activities will remain on site for the foreseeable future.”

Approximately 45 employees work at the facility.
