To the growing list of groups urging members to Buy Canadian, add Ontario’s philatelic community.
The Cobourg Stamp Club has received – and distributed to its members – an e-mail from the Markham Stamp Club containing a motion approved by the club at its March 7 meeting:
“Whereas Canada has been facing the threat of, and the imposition of, unprecedented new tariffs by the United States on Canadian products and energy entering the United States since March 4, 2025m and threats to our country’s sovereignty since January 20, 2025, and
“Whereas the federal, provincial and territorial governments are rolling-out official responses on behalf of Canada to this attack on our country and its economy, businesses, and jobs, and
“Whereas, in this national crisis, we believe it is incumbent upon Canadians to demonstrate, as best possible if they agree, their own disapproval of the American actions and to find their own ways to support and enhance the efforts of the federal, provincial and territorial governments, therefore,
“BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
“It is the objective of the Markham Stamp Club collectively and its members individually to curtail purchases of stamps covers, and other philatelic products from the United States, or sourced in that country, from this date forward until the recent threats and tariffs have ended and been removed.”
Markham Stamp Club Communications Director Klaus Hintz said the motion was “to express our concerns about our neighbours to the south,” and that it is being mailed to 31 philatelic organizations and clubs in Ontario.
With no meeting until April 9, the Cobourg Stamp Club has not made a similar resolution. And Executive Member Rob Stickan believes it is an individual’s own decision whether or not to purchase items from the US,
“I can only encourage the membership to refrain from ordering and purchasing stamp-related material through the USA market,” Stickan added.
