In Local

The shelter system in Northumberland County reach capacity earlier this week Today’s Northumberland has confirmed.

In a social media post on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 IHARC (Integrated Homelessness and Addiction Response Center) stated as of 8 p.m. on Wednesday there were no available shelter beds at Transition House.

“Furthermore, overflow, including the motel program is currently unavailable.  This means that no emergency shelter beds are available in Northumberland County.”

Manager of Communications with Northumberland County, Kate Campbell stated on Thursday the County is seeing a “very high level of need for homelessness supports in our community.”

“The system was at capacity earlier this week. Capacity within the system is very fluid, sometimes changing by the hour.”

“In instances this week where no beds were available, caseworkers were able to place some clients with alternate solutions for emergency shelter.”

Campbell explains that motels are not always a suitable option.

“The County also continues to expedite efforts to open the new shelter at 310 Division Street to better address local need, and anticipates initial services will be available this fall.”

All individuals seeking emergency shelter are encouraged to reach out to their caseworker to explore options for their circumstance.

There are 37 spaces within the shelter system.
