Camborne, Township of Hamilton – Township of Hamilton public school students had an opportunity to paint a snow plow in recognition of Local Government Week, held
October 15-21, 2023 across the province.
Students from Plainville, Baltimore, and Camborne Public Schools were invited to create and paint a design on Township snow plow blades that reflect the theme “Making Life Better” – the Township’s Vision identified in its Strategic Plan for the 2023-2026 Term of Council. The plows painted by students were specially selected by the Township’s Public Works Department to ensure that the plows will be used in the communities the students live in so they can see their artwork in action during the winter months.
In addition to the “Paint a Plow” event, Deputy Mayor Larry Williamson and Councillor Bruce Buttar visited the three schools to speak with students about local government and the services the Township of Hamilton provides to them daily. During the presentations, students learned about the election process, how local government works, the relationship between levels of government, and how students can get involved and contact their elected officials on matters that are important to them. The students also provided the council members ideas on how the Township can “Make Life Better” for all residents during the next four years. Ideas included more library services and resources, keeping taxes low, building more houses and shelters to address homelessness, and keeping the beaches clean.
“Council and staff are dedicated to good local government. These types of outreach activities and the relationships with our local schools help build an interest and awareness for local government amongst our youngest residents so they can grow into engaged and informed citizens of the future.” – Mayor Scott Jibb
The painted snowplows will be on display in the parking lot of the Township Municipal Office at 8285 Majestic Hills Drive in Camborne until Monday, October 23, 2023.
