Cobourg Police – Two Cobourg Men Named After Being Charged with Theft Over $5,000 (Names Released)

Two Cobourg men have been charged with theft over 5,000 after police conducted a traffic stop in Cobourg.

On Thursday, July 27, 2023, at 10:40 p.m., police conducted a traffic stop on a rental van travelling eastbound on Lakeshore Drive in Cobourg.

During a conversation with the two occupants, police could see a significant quantity of large-gauge copper wire in the back of the van.

As a result of the police investigation, Matthew Toomey (39) and Mark Whitefield (49), both of Cobourg, were arrested and jointly charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Toomey was additionally charged with driving while suspended.

Both parties were released on an undertaking with a future court date.
