The are likely more serious crimes committed locally, but not for one Cobourg youth who had his bicycle stolen from where he was working.
Fifteen-year-old Robert Cochrane had his new Diamondback Motown bicycle stolen from the side of Harbourlight Delights at the bottom of Division Street in Cobourg on May 28.
This is the second year Robert has worked at the business. He was called in to work on Sunday because it was so busy.
Riding his bike from his house in the west end to Harbourlight Delights he parked it at the side of the business. It wasn’t completely hidden, but it was tucked away.
Robert admits he was in such a rush to get to work, he forgot to lock his bike.
When he left work shortly before 9 p.m. he noticed that his bike was missing.
After checking the security video, it was clear what had happened.
A person walking up and down Division Street noticed the bike in the back area.
Supervisor Colby McMillan said the suspect that stole the bike can been seen on video “scoping out his bike and eventually just grabbed the bike and left.”
When Robert saw the video he became visibly upset because he worked so hard to buy the bike with his own money.
“I was surprised and angry because I had worked really hard to earn the money to buy myself a new bike,” said Robert.
“Then I got disappointed because I love getting out to go biking a lot and use it all summer to bike to work and back.”
McMillan and the rest of the staff at Harbourlight Delights have nothing but praise for Robert.
“He’s a really great kid,” said McMillan.
“He’s young, he’s got great ambition and he just wants to work, work, work and make his money so he can buy his things. He wanted a bike for the summer and then it’s gone.”
The bike was purchased in April for just over $500 (regularly $750). The store where he purchased it is completely sold out of that style now.
Cobourg Police have been notified of the theft.
