A battle between two of the top teams in the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s South-East Conference needed extra time to decide a winner Monday night at the Cobourg Community Centre.
Ty Collins scored on a power play 2:51 into overtime to give the Haliburton County Huskies a 3-2 win over the Cobourg Cougars in front of an announced crowd of 542 at the CCC.
Joel Taylor and Trevor Hoskin tallied the Cobourg goals as the teams traded one-goal leads during the first two periods before a scoreless third.
Goaltender Ryan Piros made 38 saves in a losing cause for the Cougars.
Riley Pitt, a 6-foot-5, 200 pound defenceman, made his debut for the Cougars. Pitt, who turns 20 in February, was acquired from the Acadie-Bathurst Titans of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
Haliburton (28-7-1-2) sits second in the conference, now seven points of third-place Cobourg (24-7-0-4), which has three games in hand. The Cougars have earned a point in six straight games.
Their last defeat in regulation time was Dec. 11 against the Huskies.
The Cougars are back home Wednesday night against the Stouffville Spirit (14-17-1-4). Game time is 7 p.m. at the CCC.
