Minor Collision Causes Unique Situation in Cobourg

In Editor Choice, Local

A minor collision in Cobourg on Thursday, December 29, 2022 caused a few challenges for Cobourg firefighters.

At approximately 2:15 emergency services attended the intersection of Elgin Street at Ontario Streets for a two-vehicle collision.

It appears that both vehicles were heading eastbound and at the intersection was a vehicle rear-ended a SUV.

Captain Chris Post said there was minor damage to both vehicles, but the SUV was run by propane and had two tanks under the vehicle with one leaking.

“Unfortunately for us, one of the valves got broke off and starting leaking propane.”

Elgin Street was blocked from Ontario Street to Frei Street while firefighters tried to cap the leak.

Donning breathing apparatus and a charged hose line, firefighters tried several times to stop the leak to no avail.

“Sometimes the best case scenario is to let things bleed off and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Post called it a “very unique” situation stating it’s the first time he’s had to deal with a propane vehicle in his 27-years as a firefighter.

Another issue firefighters had to contend with was at least one person who walked right through the scene even though firefighters were yelling at the person.

Firefighters marked off areas for pedestrians and traffic while they tried to cap the leak, but one person disregarded firefighters commands.
