Local Affordable Housing Committee Hosts Northumberland Mayoral All Candidates Meeting

In Upcoming Events

The Northumberland Affordable Housing Committee (NAHC) is encouraging the citizens of Northumberland to be well informed when electing individuals to serve as mayor in the upcoming municipal elections. NAHC is inviting everyone from across the seven municipalities in Northumberland County to attend the Mayoral All Candidates Meeting they are hosting on Thursday September 22nd at 9am at the Cameco Capitol Arts Centre in Port Hope.

The NAHC is stressing the importance of discussing critical housing affordability issues with candidates.

“Access to safe, stable and affordable housing is becoming more and more challenging for members of our community. Investments to increase the supply of affordable housing are necessary to address the housing crisis in Northumberland County, driving positive social and economic outcomes as we emerge from the pandemic,” said Dawn Campbell, Co-Chair of the Northumberland Affordable Housing Committee. “It is for this reason that we think it is so important to ensure that an all-candidates meeting focused on affordable housing solutions is part of the upcoming municipal election campaigns. Municipalities have a role to play in supporting the creation and maintenance of affordable and rental housing and the person serving as mayor has an opportunity to be a leader for Council when it comes to housing affordability. Additionally, mayors from the seven municipalities also form Council for Northumberland County who, as Service Manager, is responsible for homelessness and housing systems planning across the County, including provincially and federally funded programs, as well as significant levy investments into housing programs. We encourage everyone in Northumberland County to register to vote and to take advantage of all opportunities to be informed about each mayoral candidates’ solutions to address the housing crisis in our community.”

Each level of government plays an important role in the development of all housing types. The Federal Government’s National Housing Strategy offers several programs and initiatives to make rental and homeownership more affordable. Our communities need to hear how local candidates view this strategy, our local affordable housing strategies, and how they will ensure Northumberland has what it needs to offer some relief to the current housing crisis.
