OFM Completes On-Site Investigation of Suspicious Fires

In Editor Choice, Local, Police Blotter

Investigators with the Office of the Fire Marshal are still working to determine the cause of three suspicious fires Friday, July 15, 2022.

The fires destroyed or caused extensive damage to three homes. Two in Cobourg and one in Hamilton Township. The two in Cobourg were for sale. All were vacant at the time of the fires.

OFM Investigator Mike Rushton is working to find the cause of the two fires on Ontario and Albert Streets in Cobourg.

Speaking to Today’s Northumberland, Rushton said because the fires happened, “in a relatively short time frame” makes them suspicious.

The Ontario Street fire caused extensive damage to the rear of the home, but the home on Albert Street was completely destroyed.

“We’ve trying to determine the origin and within the origin potential causes, ignition sources for the fire. When the structure is more damaged, it makes the job more challenging.”

Each one of the fires is a independent investigation.

“Obviously we’re aware that it’s a unique circumstance with three fires geographically in the same time frame together, but each one will be looked at individually and independently of each other.”

Rushton completed his on scene investigation of both locations in Cobourg on Saturday.

Anyone with information or video surveillance footage of Albert Street and Ontario Street in Cobourg is asked to contact police at 905-372-6821 extension 2202 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS or online at www.stopcrimehere.ca.
