City of Kawartha Lakes OPP – Drowning on Burnt River

Members of the City of Kawartha Lakes Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call on Burnt River in Sommerville Township last evening at approximately 7:30 pm after a male who had been swimming failed to resurface.

Police attended the location, where the male was located and transported to hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The deceased has been identified as Kingston FERDINANDS, 56 years-of-age of Scarborough.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take pla ce at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto.

The OPP supports proactive steps that will help reduce provincial drowning deaths.

  • always swim with a buddy
  • let someone know when and where you’re going for a swim
  • test the waters with your feet, don’t dive right in
  • don’t swim while under the influence of alcohol / drugs
