Cobourg Celebrates AcessAbility Week

In Community, Local

By Cecilia Nasmith/Today’s Northumberland
The Town of Cobourg is partnering with its Accessibility Advisory Committee to announce programs planned in recognition of National AccessAbility Week, May 29 to June 4.

“National AccessAbility Week provides Canadians the opportunity to celebrate the valuable contributions and leadership of Canadians with disabilities, highlight the work of individuals, organizations and communities who are removing barriers, and reflect on ongoing efforts to become a better, more accessible, more disability-inclusive country,” the press release said.
This year’s theme is Inclusive From The Start.

“Working with the Accessibility Advisory Committee, the Town of Cobourg wants to create a community that is not only more accessible for all but also transition our collective thought and approach to disabilities of all kinds,” commented Councillor Aaron Burchat, Co-ordinator of Protection Services.

“Imagine a future Cobourg where improvements or alterations are no longer required, because we have made our community and its infrastructure accessible for all from the very start.”

The week will find the town sharing insights and information that will help residents to incorporate inclusive practices and language into their daily routines in a proactive way. Visit the Accessibility page on the town website (https://www.cobourg.ca/accessibility/), or follow the town on Facebook (@TownofCobourg) and Twitter (@TownofCobourg) for daily information and interactive activities, and learn more about how you can incorporate accessibility practices into your daily life.

You are also invited to join the Town of Cobourg Accessibility Committee on June 1 in Victoria Park (at the intersection of McGill and King streets) to participate in the Wheel The Walk event that will highlight physical mobility barriers in the community and how we can come together to remove them.

The 10 a.m. walk will begin at Victoria Park, travel west down King Street and end at Victoria Hall, where light refreshments will be served.
