Clean Up Continues But Still Without Power in Areas Affected By Yesterday’s Storm in Northumberland County

In Local, Weather

It will take days or long to fully restore power to areas affected by Saturday’s storm.

Winds up to 132 kph travelled across Ontario, striking Northumberland County around 1 p.m.

Downed power lines and trees reached the northern areas of Port Hope, Hamilton Township and Alnwick/Haldimand Township.

Tragically a 74-year-old Port Hope woman was killed on Knoxville Road when a she was struck by a falling tree.

In the Ganaraska Forest. A 30-year-old died while riding a motorcycle and was also struck by a tree.

As of 11 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2022, an estimated 5,500 Hydro One customers are still without power in the northern areas of Port Hope, Hamilton Township and Alnwick/Haldimand Township.

Today’s Northumberland spoke with a Hydro One employee on Sunday who stated the areas with the high volume of people will have their powered restored first, and it will trickle down to the smaller areas.

On Sunday, it appeared any areas with downed power lines that were damaged across Northumberland County haven’t been repaired. Numerous roads are still closed because of downed trees that took the power lines with them when they fell.

On Sandercock Road in Alnwick/Haldimand Township, numerous snapped hydro poles are still resting on the roadway.

The sound of generators and chainsaws could be heard in damaged areas.

On the south shore of Rice Lake on Rolling Banks Road a man uses a chainsaw to cut up to large trees that fell on his property. The tall trees spared his house the damage, but a camper parked in the driveway may have been damaged.

The man said that if it wasn’t for the camper, the trees came down perfectly.

Along County Road 18 by Shearer Point Road a downed tree takes up most of the roadway. When the tree came down it snapped a hydro pole also taking down a transformer with it.

Estimated time of repair – unknown.

Most people whose power went out yesterday are going through their second night without power with no end in site for the next few days.
