YMCA Northumberland (Cobourg) Receives $760,000 from Ontario Trillium Foundation

Government of Ontario, in collaboration with the Ontario Trillium Foundation, to help build healthy and active communities by building retrofits and support for new programming.

MPP David Piccini, Warden Crate, Mayor Henderson, and the YMCA staff announced today that the Cobourg YMCA will receive $760,000 from the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

“Healthy and active living is core to our vibrant community, said David Piccini, MPP for Northumberland Peterborough-South. “The YMCA is such an important hub for our community, and with this funding, the YMCA will be able to move forward with plans to revitalize their building. I know how much the YMCA means to Cobourg, and I’m glad that the province has been able to have a hand in making this a reality.”

“The YMCA provides the type of essential programing and support that our community relies on,” said Bob Crate, Warden of Northumberland County. “This funding for the YMCA Cobourg will ensure they can continue to deliver this value by delivering programing in a more modern and rejuvenated facility. We thank the province for this investment.”

“We’re delighted in this significant investment in our Northumberland YMCA, said John Henderson, Mayor of the Town of Cobourg. “The YMCA is the heartbeat of our community and is a busy, well-utilized facility. Receiving this investment ensures that the YMCA will be able to continue to grow its programming and sustain our resident’s active lifestyle for years to come.”

“The YMCA Northumberland Board and staff are thrilled to receive three Ontario Trillium grants in the amount of $761,600, which will provide significant support to the sustainability of our organization as we emerge and recover from the pandemic,” says Eunice Kirkpatrick CEO of YMCA Northumberland. “The funding gives our YMCA team the opportunity to continue to focus on providing critical programs and services which are needed now more that ever, that support the health and mental well-being of the people we serve throughout Northumberland County.”

The funding can be broken down as follows:

· $500,000 will be allocated towards building improvements, like: installing new heating, ventilation and dehumidification units to improve air circulation, creating a safer environment for everyone.

· $111,600 will go towards operating costs, like staffing and equipment, allowing the YMCA to continue to deliver experiences and programs for our community.

· $150,000 will support rebuilding female and male changerooms in order to create a safe, clean and healthy environment.

 

QUICK FACTS

· This funding is one of the largest commitments to the Cobourg YMCA in Ontario’s recent history.

· Capital grants from the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Trillium Foundation help improve and broaden access to community spaces. Activities funded include:

o Buying and installing equipment

o Doing renovations, installations and repairs

o Building structures or spaces

· Ontario Trillium Foundation provides grant funding through the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism, and Culture Industries through three investment streams:

o Seed: starting projects at the idea or conceptual stage

o Grow: building on the success of a proven model or program

o Capital: broadening access to and improving community spaces
