Unexpected Collapse Causes A Few Tense Moments During Demolition of Former Legion in Cobourg

In Editor Choice, Local

A unexpected collapse caused a few tense moments at the demolition of the former Legion in Cobourg on Friday, November 19, 2021.

Crews have been working since Monday on tearing down the Legion and separating piles of debris to be removed for recycling.

Two large pieces of construction equipment have been working through the week on the demolition.

On Friday afternoon at approximately 2 p.m. crews were working on demolishing the east end of the building.

As the machinery crushed the roof, the walls facing Orr Street unexpectedly collapsed tossing cinder blocks and debris onto Orr Street.

The security metal fence toppled from the wall of debris.

Just moments before there were people on the sidewalk.

One witness who watched the collapse from across the road said people would have likely been killed if they would have been on the sidewalk.

Today’s Northumberland captured the collapse on video.

Orr Street was closed for approximately 30-minutes while the rubble was cleared from the roadway.

Once debris was cleared crews went back to the demotion.

It’s expected the remaining area of the Legion will be torn down early next week.
