Tai York scored three big goals in two straight wins for the Cobourg Cougars last week.

York’s goal with 13 seconds remaining forced overtime, leading to Tucker Firth’s game-winner, in a 4-3 win for the Cougars over the Toronto Patriots last Wednesday evening at the Cobourg Community Centre. Cobourg scored twice with an extra attacker late in regulation time in that victory.

Sunday afternoon in Wellington, York scored the first of five unanswered goals for the Cougars in the first period and then the deciding goal with less than three minutes to play as they held on to defeat the Dukes 7-6.

Parker Hendsbee, Zach Smith, Trevor Hoskin and Jakob Morier, acquired last week from the Lindsay Muskies, also scored for the Cougars in the first period as they took a commanding 5-0 lead.

Wellington didn’t go quietly as they scored four times in the second, including three before the midway mark of the frame courtesy of Emmet Pierce on a power plau, Jacob Vreugdenhil shorthanded and Ethan Quick.

Jacob Gilbert put the Cougars up 6-3 at the 18:33 mark and Barret Joynt got one back at 19:46 to cut the deficit to two.

Wellington tied the game 6-6 in the third as Vreugdenhil and Joynt tallied their second goals of the contest in quick succession at 8:07 and 9:40, respectively, before York struck again at the 17:18 mark.

The Cougars (8-6-0-2) and Dukes (8-8-0-2) will meet again Monday night in Cobourg. Game time is 7 p.m. at the CCC.
