Port Hope Police – Dangerous Operation and Impaired by Drug

An off duty officer was the witness to an impaired, dangerous driver on September 29, 2021 around 7:14 pm.

The officer who was travelling eastbound toward Cobourg observed  a westbound vehicle approach him in his lane.

The witness observed the vehicle swerve back and forth from lane to lane.

The officer turned and followed the vehicle. The vehicle approached the traffic lights on County Road 2, at Hamilton Twp., Road, which was red.

The officer could see two vehicles in front of the suspects vehicle stopped for the red light.

The officer called for an ambulance as he thought the driver would collide with the one if not both of the vehicles stopped at the red light.  

Without slowing down, the driver swerved to the right hitting both vehicles and the guard rail and still continued westbound.

The officer tired to get the driver to pull over several times. The driver eventually was stopped.

The accused, George Smith age 31 from Peterborough was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and operation while impaired – drugs and alcohol. The accused will appear in court in October to answer to the charges.

Police are seeing an increase of impaired drivers by drugs.  Please call 911 if you suspect an impaired driver. Please stay on the line with the 911 operator until you see police in the area.  You could save a life by calling 911.
