In Editor Choice, Local, Police Blotter

One person was lucky to escape serious injury after severe weather toppled a tree directly in front of him as he was driving to work.

The collision happened on Telephone Road east of Vernonville Road, east of Grafton at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The lone occupant of the vehicle was travelling westbound on Telephone Road in Alnwick/Haldimand Township when it’s believed a lightning strike may have caused a tree to fall directly in front of the vehicle.

The driver took evasive action to try and avoid the downed tree steering the vehicle towards the ditch.

The incident also caused downed power lines.

Emergency services including Alnwick/Haldimand Township Fire Department, Northumberland OPP and Northumberland County Paramedics were called to the scene.

Alnwick/Haldimand Township Works Department blocked off the roadway while hydro crews repair power lines.

Forty-one customers are affected by the outage.
