A tractor trailer carrying wine flipped over on Highway 401 west of Cobourg on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.
At approximately 6:45 p.m. a tractor trailer went in the ditch in the westbound lanes of Highway 401 approximately two kilometres west of Burnham Street in Hamilton Township.
It appears the driver may have tried to regain control, but the tractor trailer rolled onto its side skidding down the highway.
Sharon McNabney and her husband Bob were on their way back to Baltimore and driving eastbound when they saw the cloud of dust.
“My husband was driving and we saw the beginning of the dirt flying,” said Sharon.
“I had my phone in my hand so I started taking photos.”
McNabney took a number of dramatic photos of the transport sliding down the highway and immediately called 9-1-1.
Hamilton Township Fire Department, Cobourg Fire Department, Northumberland County Paramedics and Northumberland OPP attended the scene of the collision.
A witness to the collision pulled over and helped the driver from the cab. The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
When firefighters opened up the back of the transport they discovered the container was full of boxes of wine.
Westbound lanes of Highway 401 west of Burnham Street were closed for several hours while heavy tow trucks were called in to remove the wreckage.
Westbound traffic was re-routed off the highway at Burnham Street. Traffic along Highway 401 was backed up for several kilometres. The highway was tentatively scheduled to be reopened at approximately midnight.
No word on charges.
