Breaking News – Provincial Government Makes Amendment Allowing Groomers to Open

In Local

MPP David Piccini kept his word and brought the concerns of groomers to his colleagues.

Piccini posted an update on social media on Wednesday evening stating the government is providing clarity regarding pet grooming through an amendment.

“Thank you everyone for YOUR advocacy,” stated Piccini.

Rules for Areas in Stage 1, which will take effect Thursday, February 4, 2021.

This will clarify that pet grooming businesses CAN open if they:

· Are strictly necessary to prevent an animal from requiring foreseeable and reasonably imminent veterinary care.

· Are providing services that an animal owner has been required to obtain pursuant to an order issued under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act, 2019.

The amendment will also clarify that pet grooming businesses may only open to provide the above-noted services if:

· They only provide the services by appointment.

· They permit only one appointment for one animal at a time.

· They are provided through curbside pickup and drop-off of the animal.

Reached for comment, Bri Crossen owner of Grooming by Bri in Cobourg stated she was very much appreciative of the efforts of Piccini.

‘”I think it’s a good start and I’m very grateful for the efforts of David Piccini advocating for the health and well being of the animals.

“It’s going to be hard to choose what animals need care more than others at this time, but I think it’s good that we are going to start helping out the animals.”

Crossen has been closed since December 26, 2020 because of the Provincial regulations that allow veterinarians to groom pets, but not dog groomers.

As a result of the amendment, Crossen has a number of animals that need care and will be taking care of their needs on Thursday.
