Update – Careless Smoking Cause of Deadly Fire in Colborne

In Local

An investigator with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has concluded careless smoking was the cause of a deadly fire in Colborne on Wednesday, January 6, 2021.

Cramahe Township firefighters responded to a residence on Norton Lane at approximately 2:30 p.m.

When they arrived smoke was coming from the upper floor.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly entered and found a unconscious woman in the upstairs bedroom.

She was immediately removed from the residence and taken to hospital by Northumberland Paramedics, but did not survive.

OFM Investigator Jason Williams concluded his investigations at the scene at approximately 10 p.m. and stated, “the cause of the fire has been deemed accidental due to careless smoking.”

It’s believed the fire started in a upholstered arm chair and spread throughout the bedroom.

Williams also stated there were working smoke alarms in the residence.

The identification of the victim is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
